DRAFT/8OCT2003 PATTERNS OF DEVELOPMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY: with relevance to poverty and equity

Sustainable development and poverty alleviation are two intertwined issues that continue to be accorded the highest priority by decisionmakers. This paper seeks to anlayse the nexus between these two topics within a transdisciplinary integrative framework (sustainomics). Following the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, including the adoption of the United Nations Agenda 21, and the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg, the concept of sustainable development has become well accepted worldwide. World decision makers are looking at this approach to solve many critical problems, including traditional development issues (such as economic stagnation, poverty, hunger, and illness), as well as newer challenges (like environmental degradation and globalisation).
